Rock Carvings, Petra, Jordan

Hidden at the end of a long ravine, the buildings of Petra, Jordan, were carved into sandstone cliffs by the Nabataeans around 312 B.C. After annexation by the Romans in A.D. 106, the city—once a hub of commerce—became less important as trade routes developed along the Red Sea and Nile River. Petra is now protected as a World Heritage site.

The moon peeks over the imposing architecture of the Monastery (Al Deir) in Petra, Jordan. The formidable Monastery, built more than 2,000 years ago, was probably a shrine for the Nabataean people of ancient Petra.

Vapor Trails, Jordan, 1984

Vapor trails stretch behind a Royal Jordanian Falcons plane during an air show over Jordan's Wadi Rum mountains. Formed in 1976, the Falcons have performed throughout the world and have earned a reputation for their precision and professionalism.

Desert Landscape, Jordan, 1999

Wind-combed dunes meet parched mud flats in Wadi Rum, a stark desertscape in southwestern Jordan. Revered for its dramatic sandstone and granite rock faces cut into a breathtaking span of sunbaked desert, Wadi Rum was made famous by Lawrence of Arabia, who based his operations there during the Arab Revolt.
