Photo of the Day 515

Leopard in Tree, Kenya

Photograph by Lesley Bender

I took at least 50 shots and spent well over an hour to capture this beauty.

The photo was taken in the Samburu region of Kenya. It had not rained in six months. However, this young female seemed in excellent shape.

Ariaal Warriors, Marsabit District, Kenya, 1999

Photograph by Maria Stenzel

Ariaal warriors rest on an outcrop amid the deserts of northern Kenya's Marsabit District. The 10,000 or so Ariaal who inhabit Marsabit have managed to maintain their nomadic way of life in spite of shrinking communal pastures, increasing ethnic tensions, and government pressure to trade their cattle culture for a more mainstream existence.

A herd of elephants makes its way through swamp grass in Kenya's Amboseli National Park. Established as a national park in 1974, the 151-square-mile (392-square-kilometer) park at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro in southwest Kenya is home to more than 450 animal species, including elephants, wildebeests, cranes, and egrets.
